The Bonnie Dundee was built in Dundee, Scotland, in 1877 and registered in Sydney as an iron screw steamer of about 193 gross register tons and 39.7 metres in length. She was employed in coastal trade and general cargo runs before her loss.

On the night of 10 March 1879 the Bonnie Dundee was struck by the steamship SS Barrabool off Swansea Heads. The collision cut the Bonnie Dundee in two and she sank within minutes; five of the 17 people on board died. The Barrabool sustained damage to her bow but remained afloat.

The wreck lies in approximately 36 metres of water off Swansea, NSW.
